Fran and Will met when they were 7 and were inseparable until After 25 years of estrangement, they meet again unexpectedly. What follows is a poignant story about love, life, and second chances. I enjoyed the intricate story and reflective tone throughout.
This is a beautiful story that reminds us live life to the fullest and appreciate our loved ones every day. Based Fran and Will met when they were 7 and were inseparable until Based on the cover and blurb, I expected a light and sweet romance story. I was wrong. This is a heavy story based on tough life choices and situations. It's the kind of story that makes me think and will stay with me for a long time. View all 23 comments. I've racked my brain trying to come up with a way to convey my thoughts on this wonderful book.
Clare Swatman has created another emotional story. This is a beautiful, poignant and inspiring tale of true love. The fact that it is such a sad novel had me a little shocked because that cover and blurb had me believing it was a romance through and through Heart-achingly emotive and beautiful story, Clare Swatman has surpassed herself wi I've racked my brain trying to come up with a way to convey my thoughts on this wonderful book.
Heart-achingly emotive and beautiful story, Clare Swatman has surpassed herself with this total gem of a book. Gut-wrenching, tear-jerking, poignant and worth every tissue I went through. Swatman beautifully manages to balance sorrow, love, humour, hope, hopelessness - oh so many elements - and has crafted a book that made me feel all the things.
The journey was heartbreaking, but I was smiling as I read the last few words.. Read this and lose a bit of your heart to Fran and Will's story. Jan 13, Cathy rated it liked it Shelves: advance-review-copy , contemporary-fiction , publisher-review-copies , netgalley , romance.
When Fran and Will run into each other in a coffee shop after a gap of twenty-five years is it coincidence, fate or something else? Finding themselves both single again, albeit each now with parental responsibilities, they quickly resume their relationship, their attraction to each other being as intense as it was all those years ago. Not all of these may seem warranted.
I found myself with immense sympathy for Will. Not only is he attempting to put things right with Fran but he is facing a personal challenge with fortitude and dignity. There are joyful moments in the book — one of my favourites involving Krispy Kreme doughnuts — but there is immense sadness as well.
Before We Grow Old is something of an emotional rollercoaster that will have you laughing one moment and tearful the next. Carpe diem, as they say. Dec 03, Eram Hussain rated it really liked it Shelves: netgalley , The story follows Will and Fran who are friends since they were seven, they start dating in high school but one day Will has to leave the country. As many things were left unsaid between them, there are a lot of small and major secrets they kept from each other.
Feb 15, Breathing Pages rated it it was amazing. I finished reading this beautiful story in a few hours. Will and Fran were best friends while growing up. They became a couple when they were teenagers, but a tragedy kept them apart for 25 years. They meet again, and it seems like they pick up exactly where they had left off.
However, they both have secrets that determine their future. The characters are great. Each and every one of them. I would have loved to see some arcs be developed I finished reading this beautiful story in a few hours. I would have loved to see some arcs be developed more, but still the story is powerful.
This story wrecked me. I cried so many times while reading it. It is bittersweet, and teaches you to live in the moment, to forgive, and love fiercely. Yes, in real life, a situation like theirs may not have happened like this, but what I keep from this story is to live; breathe every moment in.
Please read this book. Jan 15, Niki rated it really liked it. I read this book pretty quickly. It is a nice gentle read that highlights how a love lost many years before can, sometimes never be over.. Some couples are just meant to be. A well written book with believable characters, with love at its heart. If you enjoy a nice cosy read that just sort of flows over you then definitely give this book a go.
This book, based on the blurb, seemed right up to my liking. Childhood best friends, teenage first loves, the one that got away, second chance romance them rekindling after 25 years. However, for the majority of the story, I struggled to connect with it. I expected that them reconciling and building trust after it was shattered in some quite heavy events in This book, based on the blurb, seemed right up to my liking.
I expected that them reconciling and building trust after it was shattered in some quite heavy events in their youth would be the main plot. It took them one unexpected bump in cafe and dinner to get back together, so I was left confused about where this story is going as everything to reconcile them has happened. Well, the remaining part which was the majority of the story felt like a lot of doing something, revealing some secrets, doing some more random stuff, revealing some more shocking secrets type of drama.
While there were a lot of side characters and events, nothing really happens, except that for everyone reading this story is clear how it will end. Unfortunately, I think I was not the right audience for this story. The end of the book was tied up quite nicely. It was sad and made me bawl my eyes out. To conclude, for this type of story, I prefer to read non-fiction, as I feel it holds more meaning.
Nov 05, Kim rated it did not like it. Most of this book made no sense to me. Fran was a doormat type who held in two huge life changing secrets from the man she supposedly loved then held a grudge against him for years. The whole thing was very strange.

And begin one task at a time Book Review: Such a wonderful surprise favorite read All while discovering a new author for me! This story checks so many boxes for contemporary romance readers as it guides you thru first love, lifelong love, love lost, love found and second chance at love themes Navigating the minefield of friendship and love that lasts over a lifetime of experiences When love is the prize and the stakes are high, you may find yourself surprised as I was by the capability we can have to focus on the things that matter most, even in circumstances that tests love endurance I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
Nov 30, Kylie Burns rated it really liked it Shelves: netgalley , read-in Not the greatest, not the worst. I was really confused about where the story was going since it seemed like everything had already happened. Fran and Will bump into each other one day in a coffee shop after not having seen each other in a quarter of a century. I was left wondering where to go from here? Surely we can wrap the story up and call it a day?
Every chapter feels like a rush, but in a good way. I knew it would come anytime, clearly Clare Swatman has no regard to my emotions. I give this 4. This is such a moving and powerful book. I loved every character by the end of it. Highly recommended! Jan 02, Maria Ashley rated it it was amazing. I received this book from NetGalley in exchange of an honest review… This book was my last read for and I feel like I definitely saved the best for last!
I loved everything about this story. After Fran moves in next door to will at the age of 7, they become best friends. And for 11 years they are basically inseparable. After a Devasting Loss, Will and his family up and leave, Leaving Fran heartbroken and left to start her life over. After 25 years they are reunited.
But not everything is as i I received this book from NetGalley in exchange of an honest review… This book was my last read for and I feel like I definitely saved the best for last! But not everything is as it seems. Falling back in love was inevitable, but will Love be enough to keep them together, despite the secrets they are both carrying?
Fran and Will have a Love story for the ages! Their instant connection as kids is so heart warming. You image they will be together forever. But things aren't as they seem immediately. They end up separated for 25 years, and end up reconnecting. The love and attraction after 25 years jumps off the pages when they are first reconnected. This book was full of joy and sorrow. There were many moments where the past clicked and connected perfectly with the presence, and even more moments that had me gasping as truths were discovered.
This story will be one that sticks with me for years to come. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for allowing me a copy for review. Jan 19, Sarah Kingsnorth rated it it was amazing Shelves: netgalley , The bond between them was instant and strong. For 11 years, the two were inseparable, until at the age of 18, Will disappeared.
Their attraction is still overwhelming, but they both have secrets hidden that need to be told before they can move forward. I started this book thinking it was going to be a heart warming romance. It did indeed tick those boxes, but was so very much more aswell. There is joy and laughter but also sadness and heartbreak.

It was beautiful, heartwarming, heartbreaking.
My poor heart still had the hope of a happy ending, but I still loved the story nonetheless. I loved the bucket list plot, the family relationships, the romantic relationships, I feel like the author did an amazing job with that. I look forward to read other works by this author in the future and maybe even reread this one with a physical copy. Totally recommend it! I am struggling to collect my thoughts to give this book a good enough review.
Firstly it is 4 stars instead of 5 because I felt that in the first part of the book, things moved VERY quickly, a little too quickly for me. I went into this thinking it was just a romance book, but I had no idea that it would put me through all kinds of emotions. It was heartbreakingly beautiful and I think a story that will probably stick with me for a very long time.

View 2 comments. Oi, kaip apsigavau! After reading the prologue, I honestly thought the story would break me. The events of that morning are something that could happen to anyone, at any time, and it really does make you think about the fragility of life and how the guilt of something that is said or even unsaid, could cause so much regret and heartache.
Watching Zoe grieving for Ed, my heart broke for her. If only she could have changed the things she said and the way she behaved that morning. There was so much she needed to say to Ed that she should have said before and she never thought she would get another chance.
This is a wonderful poignant story of love, regret and the difficulties of trying to make relationships work. Zoe and Ed and indeed most of the supporting characters including her best friend Jane, and families are all so expertly portrayed, you find yourself drawn into their world of university student flatshares and then later on, into their lives together — the failure to communicate properly what they both want for the future — and do they want the same things, at the same time?
They certainly both have some tough times to deal with during their relationship and there are moments when it seems that love is not enough to get them through. The writing is beautiful and perceptive and I took the characters to my heart, flaws and all. Mais uma boa estreia. Nenoriu atskleisti daugiau.

This might not be the best book you'll ever read often it is very clear that the writing is young and that it is done by a debut novelist. Yet, I do recommend this book since it deals with a subject that is incredibly valuable - the fragility of relationships, especially when tragic loss happens. The book is an emotional roller coaster but in a very relatable way. The author managed to capture the specter of problematics when it comes to degradation of relationship and our inability to fix them This might not be the best book you'll ever read often it is very clear that the writing is young and that it is done by a debut novelist.
The author managed to capture the specter of problematics when it comes to degradation of relationship and our inability to fix them before it's too late. It will definitely make you think about leaving the house before an argument is settled, it would make you think about the importance of that "I love you" or a kiss before we leave the house.
It will make you want to send a message to that one friend who meant so much to you, but you kinda lost touch at some point. Like I said, these things are incredibly important and we tend to not deal with them until it might be too late and fixing is no longer an option.
May 17, Tatyana Naumova rated it liked it Shelves: Justifiably, as it turns out. The meaning or purpose behind whole story was a little blurry. Mar 12, Katerina rated it liked it. June Edward Williams, "Ed", Zoe's husband has been hit by a bus and pronounced dead upon impact. On this very day, their last interaction went horribly. Grieving for two months, she loses her composure, and blacks out on her front porch gardening, only to wake up in , at eighteen years old.
Reliving moments between her and Ed, every night Zoe she goes to sleep, she wakes up in another date significant to their lives in the past. Each of these days comes with June Edward Williams, "Ed", Zoe's husband has been hit by a bus and pronounced dead upon impact.
Each of these days comes with her omniscience on how the rest of their lives will map out and in turn she tries to create subtle shifts to change the trajectory of Ed's life - hopefully not leading to his demise. I was expecting Ed to be someone charming, and witty. He meets her in , but they don't start dating until It's life-like. He was the classic "yo-yo" guy who throws you into heartache.
A man who couldn't own up to his feelings, who didn't want to complicate things so in turn never starts a relationship with a woman who could be the one. She watches him proceed to date over the years until he finally chases her. She wasn't pining for him, don't get me wrong, but it just left me a little bereft. There was so much time wasted on trivialities.
But that's also what people do. We are too scared to own up to our feelings, and too scared to be happy. Most of the time we live our lives as cynics. You have a great night together, and then he buggers off and leaves you pining for four months, and still no word. The bitterness. The altercations. His obstinate disregard of marriage as a constitution despite her will to be married to him.
Zoe never wanting to be a mother, but Ed desperately needing a family with her. Desperately wanting to be a father. And here I am, on my way to meet Ed again. As the Tube rattles towards central London my heart thumps wildly, thinking about enjoying a date with Ed again, a date when we still actually like each other. Before, back in , Ed and I had hardly been friends any more, let alone lovers. We were at breaking point.
I felt infinitely sad witnessing their mistakes. Their desire for a child later on in their lives. The failures. The IVF. The resentment. Both of them could have been so much better to one another. I wanted more from Ed. He could have been better to her. It's about compromise. And when they both do, it puts them through the wringer.
I wanted a chapter where we could witness the depth of his love like we can see hers. When Ed died the first time it comes with the knowledge that their marriage was in tatters. When he dies the second time, albeit slightly differently car accident it's with the gift that Zoe isn't alone. And that perhaps, though Ed is no longer alive, a part of him is finally with her.
But, I think the part of Before You Go which annoyed me most is that, a baby - something he desperately wanted, was a dream he never got to see to fruition or even hear the news of. He deserved to know he was going to be a father, even if he did die. Ed wanted a life with Zoe. It was cruel to the reader. I mean I would have been happier if he just died a minute after hearing the news on the phone. Ah well, we can't have it all now, can we? Felizmente, consegui o meio termo.
Feb 15, selected.
